Okay, so we
are within two months of our Fightin’ Texas Aggies’ 2015 Football Season and I
think we know enough to start making some predictions and evaluations.
First off,
let’s talk about last season. “Up and down” doesn’t even begin to describe it.
At times, they looked like one of the best teams in college football. At
others, they got spanked, 59-0. The success of beating South Carolina and
Arkansas was quashed by the stretch of games that followed, with losses to
Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Alabama.
After the
Alabama game, Kenny Hill was benched for Kyle Allen and the team went out and
got its sea legs with him against Louisiana-Monroe and then upset No. 3 Auburn
on the road. But the newfound success was short lived as the team lost to both
Missouri and LSU. A Liberty Bowl victory over West Virginia gave the season a
good spin to finish with, and the youth of the team was often apparent, but
changes needed to happen.
Coaching Changes
Coaching Changes
So on that
note, let’s talk coaching. Kevin Sumlin and most of the offensive staff returns,
but I for one am really excited about the addition of Dave Christensen and
Aaron Moorehead. The offensive line definitely regressed last season and the
running game was non-existent at times, so Christensen’s addition ought to help
there, and with the youth of the wide receiver corps, a young, energetic, NFL
veteran coach should also have an impact.
But the big
splash in the offseason was John Chavis, the defensive guru that has dominated
the SEC for decades. For a team that was awful on defense and getting worse,
this was a much needed change. The only question was whether they should try
for the brass ring – could Sumlin win the ultimate recruiting war for one of
the top defensive minds, and for quite some time, there was a real question.
But then it happened – the Aggies got their man, and their man was probably the
best defensive mind to wear Aggie football gear since R.C. Slocum.
To those of
us who sorely miss the days of the real Wrecking Crew of the 80s and 90s, the
potential here is so very intoxicating. Clearly, recruiting as the team in
Texas in the SEC has been huge, and even with the weaknesses in the coaching
staff the Aggies were doing well. But now? Now the gloves can come off and this
team can really shoot to be the best in the SEC on both sides of the ball.
So that,
along with a top 15 recruiting class, sets the table for the next step in the
discussion – how will it play out? Stay tuned dear readers. That will be our
next installment.
